Sprouts are not just young plants—they're nutritional powerhouses that can transform your bird's health and vitality. Rich in enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and living energy, sprouts are one of the easiest and most effective ways to naturally boost your parrot’s diet!
At Polly’s Natural Parrot Boutique, they curated a range of organic soaking and sprouting mixes designed specifically for parrots. These specially selected seeds, when sprouted correctly, offer your bird:
🌱Enhanced Nutritional Value: Sprouting activates enzymes that unlock nutrients, making them more bioavailable.
🌱Enzyme-Rich: These enzymes aid in digestion and help your bird absorb more from their food.
🌱Low Fat, High Protein: Sprouted seeds have reduced fat content but increased usable protein.
🌱Boosts Immunity: Packed with antioxidants and phytonutrients to support a healthy immune system.
🌱Mental Enrichment: Sprouts encourage natural foraging behaviour and add variety to the diet.
🌱Improved Digestive Health: Natural fibre and enzymes help promote gut health.
🥗 How to Feed Sprouts:
Raw sprouts can be fed on their own or mixed with your parrot’s fresh chop salad. Most birds love the crunch, freshness, and texture!
⚠️ Sprout Safety:
Always check for any sour smell or slimy coating before serving.
If you're unsure whether the sprouts are safe—toss them! It’s not worth the risk.
Do not cook the sprouts, and never feed the dry mixes.
Avoid using hot water—always soak in cool, clean water.
In warmer or humid conditions (like summer), it’s safer to soak and sprout in the fridge.
Add a few drops of apple cider vinegar (ACV) or vegan grapefruit seed extract to the soaking water to help deter bacterial growth.
âś… How to Soak and Sprout Seeds Step-by-Step:
Rinse the Seeds Thoroughly Use cool, clean water to wash away any dust or debris.
Soak for 8–12 hours (or overnight) in a cool, dark, non-humid location.
Drain and Rinse
After soaking, drain the water completely.
Rinse the seeds with clean water.
Drain well to prevent sitting water (which causes mould).
Sprout the Seeds
Ensure the sprouting jar you use allows air to circulate.
Keep in a dark, cool place and rinse 2-3 times daily.
Sprouts should be ready in 1–3 days, depending on seed type. The mix we used here is ready on day 2 or 3.
Serve Fresh
Give sprouts to your bird once tiny tails appear.
Rinse before serving.
Store extras in an airtight container and keep in the fridge. Use within 2–3 days, rinsing daily as well.
Adding sprouts to your bird’s bowl is a simple and natural way to supercharge their diet! It’s a habit that supports both physical health and mental stimulation, helping your parrot thrive from the inside out.
If your parrot seems hesitant to try sprouts at first (like Mia!)—don’t give up! Like many intelligent animals, parrots can be cautious with new foods, especially if they’re unfamiliar with the texture or smell. Try introducing sprouts slowly by mixing small amounts into their favourite fresh foods or chop, and let them explore at their own pace. You can also offer them at different times of day or serve them in different ways to make the experience more engaging. Persistence and patience are key—many birds will grow to love sprouts once they realize how tasty and fun they are to eat!
